How are fridges and freezers disposed of?

How Are Fridge Freezers Recycled?

Fridges and freezers contain coolant gasses which are harmful to the environment. This means in terms of waste disposal they are deemed as a hazardous waste type and can only be processed by a specialist recycler holding either a bespoke environmental permit, or a T11 Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment exemption.

The appliance must be degassed, and the gas disposed of separately. After degassing the item is broken down into component waste types. Metals are recovered for recycling, and other parts usually end up as landfill.
