Asbestos covers a group of natural silicate minerals which share common properties of long, thin fibrous crystals, which are made up of even smaller fibrils. Asbestos has very good insulation properties, against heat, electricity, sound, as well as being fairly strong, able to mix with cement, and relatively cheap. This led to wide spread use in the building industry, as well as some other areas.

It can be found in pre 1980’s properties (usually) in the UK, used in corrugated shed/out building roofing (mixed with cement), roofing fascia’s, artex ceiling, and many other places.

Due to the health implications of inhalation exposure to the fibrils, it is rarely used at the current time, and should only be dealt with by a qualified and experienced business. Disposal needs to be through recorded channels, in line with legislation and treated as hazardous waste.
